Gentlemen,

2023 Racing Season

It is time to start thinking about the 2023 racing season.  I am listing the Four Northern California Events with the hope that possibly all of them will be sufficiently attractive to secure dedicated race groups. I asked in Bulletin 1 for your feedback.  My assumption was that most of us will want to do both major spectator events, The Reunion and the Velocity Invitational.  Would you also like to do the CSRG David Love (late March) and/or the CSRG Laps For Laguna (late June) club events as a group?  Please let me know your preferences as soon as possible so that I can work out the details with the organizers.

Your responses to the questionnaire, regarding race dates for this season, were very encouraging.  We are going to have a very good turnout for each of the dates suggested!  If you haven’t already done so, it is time to get your entry requests in.  Here are the details:

  • CSRG DAVID LOVE MEMORIAL RACES at Sonoma Raceway March 24-26. We have 20+ entries and thus will have our own Race Group. Please get your entries in now to CSRG.motorsportreg.com
  • CSRG LAPS FOR LAGUNA at Laguna Seca Raceway, June 23-25. We will have an excellent turnout although it is most likely that for this event CSRG will need to add in cars from their Group 1 (Sports and GT cars up to 1963). Entries are open now on csrgracing.org/schedule.html
  • ROLEX MONTEREY MOTORSPORTS PRE AND REUNION at Laguna Seca, August 12-13 (Pre) and 16-19 (Reunion). Our Race Group is for 1947-1955 Sports Racing and GT and 1956-1960 Front Engine Sports Racing cars.  The Race Group will be included in the Pre Reunion. We will have dedicated paddock space as in prior years. Entries should be submitted NOW as the declared deadline is February 1. Go to register.weathertechraceway.com.  A Hill Climb is offered separately on Sunday August 20th. (the Reunion ends on Saturday).
  • VELOCITY INVITATIONAL at Sonoma Raceway, November 10-12. We will again have our own Race Group and paddock space. Entry request form is at velocityinvitational.com then use the Drivers tab. Entry deadline is April 15.   (Recall that we participated in this wonderful event last year at Laguna Seca with 25+ entries)

Looking back at the Velocity International 2022

We produced a full DMTRG panel display for Velocity Invitational with direct involvement and encouragement from Steve Earle.  David Gentry’s artwork and graphic wizardry was very well received by spectators and organizers as a model presentation of the historical context of our Race Group and the ongoing celebration of the Pebble Beach Races.  The Del Monte Trophy was on display as well.  As is customary, one of the finishers from each of our Over and Under 2000cc classes was chosen to be added to the winners lists.  Jim Alder and his white XK-120 Jaguar and Dennis Adair and his Elva Mk 1 were chosen for 2022.  Thank you to “judges” John Buddenbaum, Tim Barnes, David Nelson and Robert Davis.

Thanks also go to David Gentry, Marcus Bicknell and Jon LeCarner for their efforts to present and display our cars and the Sports Car racing era that they represent through the paddock displays (TotalExpo.com), artwork and graphics (gentryarts.com) and our social media Facebook page (MontereySportsCarRoadRacers) and web site (DMTRG.com).

A big shout out to every one of us for keeping these very significant cars on the track and on display for the folks who knew them then and especially for the folks who see and are fascinated by them today. Moving Forward into a spectacular Del Monte Trophy Race Group 2023.  Best Wishes,

Rob Manson
