The Unlimited Class was the premier and highest-horsepower race group at the historic Pebble Beach Road Races (1950β1956). Reserved for sports cars over 1,500 cc, this category featured roaring Cadillac-powered Allards, Jaguars, and Ferraris racing through the Del Monte Forest.
The Del Monte Trophy, the main event of the weekend, was often won by these roaring, unmuffled machines and is still awarded every year. Notable drivers and race-winning cars from the Unlimited group included:
Bill Pollack: Piloted Tom Carsten’s #14 Allard J2 Cadillac to a 3rd-place overall finish in the 1953 Unlimited race. Pollackβs family will be present this week for the 75th celebration.
Phil Hill: Future Formula 1 World Champion, who famously dominated the course in Jaguar XK120s. Philβs son Derek Hill races with us this week at Laguna Seca in the Parkinson Jaguar.

Today, the spirit of the Pebble Beach Road Races is kept alive by the Del Monte Trophy Race Group (also known as the Pebble Beach Road Racers). During Monterey Car Week, these historic 1950s sports cars take to the track at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, while restored race cars from the original events are frequently displayed as featured classes at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance – 21 of them this year, the 75th Anniversary celebration.
