Friday Aug 7 is the Monterey Car week kick-off. Race cars get a police escort from Laguna Seca to downtown Monterey (5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on the 300 block of Alvarado Street) for several thousand enthusiastic locals and visitors to lust over⦠oh, and to talk to the owners and drivers.

1952 Schaghticoke Streets Manning Special
Ford Mercury V8 4185cc, 1936 Ford running gear, tubular ladder chassis, built in Schaghticoke NY by Wally Chapman from Chuck Manning’s plan set. John Streets helped finish the car and raced it in Upstate New York and Canada until 1958.
1953 Tatum GMC Special
Inline 6-cyl GMC motor 4,949cc. Built by Charles βChuckβ Tatum in Stockton CA who competed in the 1954 Pebble Beach Road Races and in California road races 1953-55. The car co-starred with Tony Curtis in the Hollywood movie Johnny Dark.

Fiber glass, aluminum and steel, red #9 Kurtis 500S with 240 cu.in. Dodge Red Ram Hemi V8. This Kurtis 500S was driven in the 1954 Pebble Beach Road Race by Roy Wiley of Fresno CA as a late entry and at Pikeβs Peak in the late 50s. John Buddenbaum drives in 2026 for owner Rob Manson.
