During Monterey Car Week one of our postings on our vibrant and well-followed Facebook page (155,000 views in 28 days) was โa lot of grey hairs thereโ. Correct. The average age of the drivers is just about the age of the carsโฆ born 1950 thru 1956, and we have several drivers over 80. Imagine, theyโve lived through 15 U.S. presidents and two British monarchs. Rob Manson sat on his dadโs shoulders to watch the Pebble Beach Road Race. We care for the cars we drive and the motor-racing heritage they represent.
But we are young at heart. We race like very devils, late on the brakes, hard in the corners, full gas on the straightaways, man-hugs and guffaws of joy afterwards. And there is a smattering of young drivers in the pack, most of them sons of dads who have the cars, but nonetheless, young guys. Johnny Mote, Ben Wysard, Kaiden Marouf, Jon LeCarner, Lars Mapstead, Gregor Magnusson and Kevin Adair all bring the average age down. And they are the future. The cars will outlast the present third age owners, then a new generation takes over, caring for them and driving them. This is one of the objectives of the Del Monte Trophy Foundation, the not-for-profit set up by Rob Manson and his colleaguesโฆ to educate a new generation about the importance of the Pebble Beach Road races and these cars to the history and present of motor racing in California and worldwide. In another 75 years our kidsโ kids will be reading this and saying of course weโre still driving the cars. And they are even easier to maintain in 2101 than they were in 2026โฆ no need for unobtainium because AI synthetics will make spare parts at a couple of key strokes. The Pebble Beach Road Racers will ride on into the distant future.
By the way, while I have your attention, demand was HUGE and we sold out of our branded shirts at the Reunion last week but there are a few packs of cards and decals left.
