Let’s recap.
The 1950 Parkinson Jaguar wins both its races in the Pebble Beach Road Racers’ class at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion … AND … wins at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance IN THE SAME WEEKEND. Win Win. Is this a first? Historians, get cracking please, we need to know.

Derek Hill’s hands at the wheel of this exotic and precious machine – racing and exhibiting – was especially significant because the car was constructed and raced by his uncle. His father Phil Hill, F1 World Champion in 1971 for Ferrari, and Don Parkinson were brothers-in-law. Don Parkinson raced twice at Pebble Beach in his stock Jaguar XK120, finishing second in the inaugural Pebble Beach Cup. But on the second occasion at Pebble Beach, in May 1951, Don wrapped the XK120 round a tree of the Del Monte Forest. The body was so badly damaged that the engine, chassis and running gear of the crashed car became … the 1950 Parkinson Jaguar Special, today’s double winner. Read more about the re-installation of a Jaguar engine and the rebuild by Terry Buffum and John Buddenbaum, the car’s habitual driver, by clicking on the image or the next block.
Lightning never strikes twice…
1) At Laguna Seca on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th August 2026, Derek Hill in the 1950 Parkinson Jaguar sports racing car triumphed in both races for the Pebble Beach Road Racers – the Del Monte Trophy Race Group – at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. It was a moral and sporting triumph for Derek Hill, and for the car’s generous owner Rob Manson who is the steward of the Del Monte Trophy race group and mastermind of the extraordinary 75th Pebble Beach Road Race celebrations.
Lightning never … … oh yes it does

2) Then the Parkinson Jaguar won the prestigious Phil Hill Cup at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2026, one of 22 Special awards https://www.pebblebeachconcours.net/cars/2026-special-award-winners/#. This cup began as The Pebble Beach Cup and was awarded initially to the winner of the Pebble Beach Road Races. After the races concluded, it re-emerged as Concours award for the most significant race car. In 2005, it was renamed for Hill, a World Driver’s Champion who had not only won three of the seven early Pebble Beach Road Races, but also won Best of Show twice at the Concours and was a long-time judge here. The car was credited as “1950 Jaguar XK120 Don Parkinson Special shown by Derek Hill, Ojai, California” so that Phil Hill’s son Derek be credited with the car. The car belongs of course to the modest behemoth of hot rod road race car collectors Rob Manson and was driven by him up the winner’s ramp on Sunday. In the passenger seat was Mark Brinker, author of the fabulous new 1700-page book Heroes of the Forest, a full-detail history of the Pebble Beach Road Races https://heroesoftheforestbook.com. Rob co-authored and sponsored the book with Mark. Derek Hill was called upon to pilot the car from lawn to podium but he could not be found, so owner Rob took the wheel, Mark and the applause.
